Brevard County Animal Services will be initiating a new Low-Cost Pet Sterilization Program to assist eligible county residents in getting their cats and dogs spayed and neutered.  Like the rest of the nation, Brevard County suffers from the consequences of a severe animal overpopulation problem.  About half the cats and dogs admitted to Brevard County’s shelters are euthanized and the direct or indirect costs of the problem run into the millions of dollars.

The program is being organized by Animal Guardians of Brevard, and six local veterinarian’s offices and clinics have agreed to participate.  They include the North Brevard SPCA, Central Brevard Humane Society, Florida Aid to Animals, Brevard Community Animal Hospital, Aloha Pet and Bird Hospital, and Palm Bay Animal Clinic.

The program will be administered by Brevard County but will be entirely supported by grants and private donations which will be held in an account specifically dedicated to the Spay-Neuter Program.  There will be no cost to the taxpayers and organizers are hopeful they can add a no-cost option when adequate funding allows.

Residents seeking assistance will be required to show proof of financial need and will pay $20 for sterilization of a male or female cat.  Rabies and distemper shots will be included if needed.    The program will be expanded to include dogs in the near future.

The planned start-up date for the program is February, 2011.  February is nationally recognized as “Prevent a Litter Month.”  Fundraising will begin immediately with proceeds from the County shelters’ special adoption events in November and December going toward the program.

Donations are needed to make this important program viable, and are being accepted at the North and South Animal Care and Adoption Centers and the main office of Brevard County Animal Services.  Donors are requested to be sure to designate “Low Cost Spay-Neuter Program” on their checks.  For more information call 321-255-4346 or visit www.brevardanimalservices.com
